Universities buy building and maintenance work, cleaning, catering, lab equipment, IT, research services, marketing and events. They run big estates, and plenty of the work suits small firms. Here is how they buy.
Universities publish their bigger contracts on Find a Tender and Contracts Finder, often through their own e-tendering portal. Many aren't marked as suitable for small firms. Every university tender open now is listed here, of any size.
Most universities belong to a regional purchasing consortium that runs frameworks its members buy from. The ones that appear again and again in the award notices are the Southern Universities Purchasing Consortium (SUPC), the London Universities Purchasing Consortium (LUPC), the North Western and North Eastern Universities Purchasing Consortia (NWUPC and NEUPC), APUC in Scotland and HEPCW in Wales. When their framework for your trade reopens, getting a place can lead to calls for work from many universities. Watch for those notices in your trade's tender list and on early notices.
Across 211 university open competitions with awards published June to October 2026, the median drew four and a half bids, and 23% drew two or fewer (against five bids and 26% across the public sector). The figures and the method.
